The Maelstrom by E.A.Poe

A sociological interpretation for one of the numerous and magnificent tales written by Edgar Allan Poe.

QUESTIONS TO TALK ABOUT
  1. According to Marshall Mc. Luhan, what is the global village?
  2. What does E.A.Poe tell in this story?
  3. Can you see any parallelism between the tale and our current society? Which one?
  4. What did the sailor observe and how did he survive?
  5. The media and the huge vortex that it creates presents us with similar possibilities of evasion and destruction, so how can we save ourselves from this chaos in society?
  6. Do you agree with the sociologist? What are other negative effects of media in our lives?

A visit from St. Nicholas. Poem

This poem was published anonymously in 1823. These days most people believe it was written by Clement Clarke Moore, but nobody knows for sure. This poem is responsible for the modern image of Santa Claus, creating his physical appearance, the way he travels, the number and names of his reindeer and the tradition of bringing toys to children while they sleep on Christmas Eve.
The first video is just for Listening practice.

Where I’m From Poem

I’m from chimney stacks to rooftops,
From flats to houses
To askin’ my granddad
How the Grouse is.

From a jumper to a chiamara
And my very first camera,
To learning the French for ‘stamp’
Oh, by the way, it’s ‘timbre’.

I’m from kilts to tortilla,
And haggis to morcilla
And having gone through it all
I couldn’t feel more me...ah

I’m from Friday night parties
To the Sunday school preacher,
To where I am today
Your very own teacher.

WHRE I´M FROM POEM

                      WHERE I´M FROM POEM

                I´M FROM THE PLACE
YOU CAN FIND THE BEST FRIENDS.
WHERE I SAW THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AUTUMM.

I´M FROM THE PLACE I HAVE MY ZOO
AT HOME , WHERE MY CAT ,
RON, LIVES SINCE HE WAS 3 MONTHS.

I´M FROM THE PLACE YOU CAN
              ENJOY CHISTMAS.
WHERE YOU CAN FIND THE MOST BEAUTIUL
WINTER , ALTHOUGH SOME TIMES DOESN´T SNOW.
I´M FROM THE PLACE YOUR DREAMS ARE POsSIBLE
WHERE YOU CAN DISCOVER A WONDERFUL SPRING ,
             WITH LOSTS OF FLOWERS .

I´M FROM THE PLACE WHERE IF YOU ARE WALKING
IN THE STREET , YOU CAN SMELL THOSE
             DELICIOUS SMELLS FROM BAKERIES.

The Mayflower and Thanksgiving celebration

Maybe you know a few facts about Thanksgiving and the way North American people celebrate this day but probably you don´t know much about the voyage and all the hardship the first pilgrims had to go through. Let´s learn about The Mayflower -the ship that took the first voyagers-by watching this video below!

Answer the following questions:

1—When did the story begin? ... ………………………………..

2--Where did the Mayflower sail out from?

3--Who were the people on  board?  (How many of them were there?)

4--What were they seeking in the new world?

5--How long did the journey take?

6--What were the conditions on  board?

7--What did the captain have faith in? And the pilgrims?

8—Why did Lucy say that they must get in the New World?

9--Did they finally make it to the New World?

As soon as I reached England

As soon as I reached England...

As soon as I reached England, the biggest smile appeared in my face. It was cloudy (as usual) and soon little drops caressed my face. I didn't notice. I breathed deeply and the salty air with tree's perfume, flooded my lungs. That was the air I knew the best. I stayed sitting in a beautiful park. It had a lot of magnificent trees. The aroma of the trees became more intense while the sun appeared for a few minutes. The sunlight didn't reach my skin, cause lots of leaves stopped it. Suddenly the sun hid and the darkest clouds I've ever seen occupied the sky. In a moment, a fierce rain approached. So I decided to go to my lonely and warm home. I needed to rest.
